Clayton Perlman: Tips to Play the Guitar

Clayton Perlman is a talented guitarist, having enjoyed the opportunity to make music and entertain local crowds as part of a modern country band for the past several years.
But Perlman didn’t get to the spot he was by accident. Earning a spot in a local band took hard work, including years of practice and an internal desire to pursue his craft and refine his skill on the six-string.

Learning to Play the Guitar

As Clayton Perlman knows, everyone learning to play guitar does so at their own pace and in their own way; though, there are a few basic practices that can benefit anyone looking to improve their skills.

Holding the guitar correctly. Right-handers are served best by perching the body of the guitar on their right knee with the neck pointing toward the left (and vice versa for left-handed musicians).

• Learning basic chords. Starting out by mastering easy chords like the Em7 and G6 helps ensure a good foundation for improvisation.

• Playing easy songs. Again, starting out easy helps establish a solid foundation for improving your skill down the road
